Chevrolet COPO Camaro

Guess Who Is Back?

There are several things we remember from the 60’s. The Vietnam war raged on, To Kill a Mockingbird was released and….Oh yeah, the Chevrolet COPO Camaro was one of the best stock cars back of the 1960’s.
The 60’s was a time when Chevy's vehicle special order program, the Central Office Production Order (COPO), became famous due to its well known track record of producing performance-minded Camaros.
Most of these Camaros were designed with the purpose of becoming Stock Eliminator racers.
Now fast forward 50 years to the present, and we are seeing the COPO Camaro make its concept vehicle comeback.
The new COPO Camaro is designed with the same specifications as NHRA Stock Eliminator drag racing competition vehicles. One awesome feature of the COPO Camaro is that it comes with a few engine options. One of these engine options is the 7.0-liter naturally-aspirated engine that was used in the original COPO Camaro, long before communism fell.
The COPO Camaro’s Concept design sticks to its set-up as a full-spec drag racing car, so that meant a completely overhaul of the Camaro. This meant saying goodbye to the fancy features that usually come in a standard Camaro and saying hello to a full array of race equipment.
Now for those of you worried about losing certain features, don’t fret, for Chevy added a set of features for all the racing fans out there. The COPO Camaro will include a full molly roll cage (made of chrome, of course) as well as a high-rise cowl-induction system. Chevrolet also gave the COPO Camaro 29" lightweight COPO-specific racing wheels that are wrapped in 4.5x28x15" inch front tires.
The Camaro’s interior was also redesigned, with the COPO receiving a pair of racing bucket seats, and taking out the rear seat (Note: in a race two is a crowd and three is company). The COPO also has a safety harness for the driver, a competition floor shifter, and Chevrolet Performance gauges made by Auto Meter.
Chevy also gave the COPO Camaro a tweaking in the overall handling and set-up to give it even more capabilities on the race track. It now has a coil-over suspension with Strange Engineering adjustable struts, which are located in the front, and a custom suspension with Strange Engineering shocks, a Panhard bar and a stabilizer bar complete the exterior set-up of the muscle car.
GM Performance Parts unveiled a new video of the COPO Camaro during its first run. It can be viewed at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1UJkb1wePuw
